About Us
Our History
Culmore National School was established on 1st of April 1869 in the townland of Cloonaghboy, parish of Kilconduff, Barony of Gallen.
Although records vary, it is believed that approximately 177 pupils attended the school at this time. Initially there was one teacher, Mr. Patrick Hayden. On further application, a second teacher, Mary Higgins was appointed.
It is believed this original school building was constructed on what we now know as our “football pitch”.
The current school building was built in 1928, to replace the dilapidated original school. Many additions and upgrades have been added to this school building and its’ surroundings over the years, with many more to come.
In 1999, Culmore National School and the wider community came together for a school reunion. Articles were written, memories recorded, photographs were re-discovered and paintings were created. This huge amount of work and love of the school and local area, all culminated in a fantastic historical publication of a book called “Culmore National School, Down Memory Lane”. Copies of the book are still available at the school, if you wish to find out more about the history of Culmore National School and the surrounding villages.
